Pneumatic Ship Fender
Pneumatic ship fender, also called Yokohama fender, has been used in port, harbor, and maritime operations for decades since it was developed in 1958. With the development of ship technology, this pneumatic ship fender is used extensively in ship-to-ship transfer operations and ship mooring and berthing operations. It’s always regarded as a buffer to reduce shock in between due to its excellent performance of great elasticity and abrasion-resistance.
Pneumatic ship fenders are divided into three types, including sling type, hydro-pneumatic type, and chain and tire net type. Each type plays a critical role in protecting the safety of marine operations.

Pneumatic Ship Fender Advantage
1. No Variation or Deformation in Performance
Pneumatic ship fender is filled with the air of compressive elasticity inside, the deformation caused by fatigue is absent. In the experiment below of pneumatic ship fender, the performance variation will not happen if the pressure is maintained properly.
Our pneumatic ship fender remains the same without any variation or deformation even at temperatures under -50 degrees centigrade (-58 degrees Fahrenheit).
2. Advantage Under Severe Weather Conditions
Under normal circumstances, the ship movement caused by high and long-period waves or strong wind will bring repeated compression and shearing forces on the fender and make it easier to be fatigue and damage. However pneumatic ship fender is strong enough to resist severe weather conditions, the reaction force increases slowly compared with solid fender and won’t easily reach the maximum.
Pneumatic Ship Fender Classification
Pneumatic ship fenders are produced with two initial pressure ratings, which are pneumatic 50 (P50, initial internal pressure 50kPa) and pneumatic 80 (P80, initial internal pressure 80kPa).
Pneumatic ship fenders are mainly classified into three types as follows:
1. Pneumatic Ship Fender with Chain and Tyre Net
With chain and tire net covering the fender body, the pneumatic ship fender can reduce the damage of friction and abrasion caused by direct contact. Therefore it’s widely used in places with complicated and unstable tide variation, such as ship-to-ship(STS) and ship-to-dock(STD) operations. In addition, as for the protective tire, Jerryborg offers four types of tires with different sizes and thicknesses for customers to choose from.
2. Sling Type Pneumatic Ship Fender
Sling type pneumatic ship fender will be connected with a guy chain or guy rope with a lifting device on both ends.
3. Hydro Pneumatic Type Ship Fender
Hydropneumatic ship fender is usually used as a bumper with submarines and other semi-submersible platforms. It can be installed vertically in the water cause it’s filled with air and water inside and equipped with a counterweight.

4. Other Types
Pneumatic Ship Fender Structure
① Outer rubber layer
Pneumatic ship fenders are covered by the outer layer made of natural rubber. This rubber compound is strong enough to protect the inner layer and synthetic-cord layer from the damage of external forces and severe weather conditions due to its high elasticity and abrasion resistance.
② Synthetic-tire-cord layer
The Synthetic-tire-cord layer is made of synthetic-tire-cord fabrics, compared with synthetic canvas fabric and synthetic belt fabric, this reinforcement layer performs better in fatigue-resistance and pressure-holding.
③ Inner rubber layer
The inner layer is designed to seal the air inside the fender.
